Partnering for Sustainability: Neelands Group and Sobeys Cut Energy Use and Emissions

Neelands Group is committed to delivering energy-efficient solutions that drive sustainability and operational excellence. Our partnership with Sobeys on a Refrigeration Retrofit Project reflects this commitment, with customized retrofit packages designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and optimize energy use across Canada.
Working with Exergy Associates Ltd. and contractors nationwide, we implemented measures to enhance refrigeration performance, improve efficiency, and lower costs while aligning with environmental standards.
Based on estimated projections, Sobeys will reduce refrigeration energy consumption by 25%, translating to roughly 10% savings on total energy costs across participating locations. Beyond cost benefits, transitioning to low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigerants plays a crucial role in reducing environmental impact.
A key challenge was meeting tight fiscal-year deadlines while maintaining quality. Strong collaboration and industry expertise enabled us to deliver results efficiently.
With support from Sobeys, contractors across Canada, and utility providers in Ontario and Atlantic Canada offering rebates and incentives, the project has made significant progress. Nearly 100 locations were retrofitted in fiscal year 2025, with energy incentive applications submitted for 45 sites. The outcomes include lower emissions, reduced energy consumption, improved reliability, and decreased service costs.
Strategic investment in these measures sets a strong precedent for long-term efficiency gains.
